Northwest Environmental handles pest problems for households and businesses in Stockton Heath and Grappenhall, including Victoria Square, Grappenhall village and Thelwall. Wasps, grey squirrels, rodents, crawling insects and nuisance birds are all covered, with visits run from our Warrington base, a short hop over the Ship Canal. Book by phone or through the contact form.
Water on both sides: the Ship Canal and the Bridgewater
Stockton Heath has water on both sides. The Manchester Ship Canal forms its northern edge and separates it from Latchford and the north of the town, while the Bridgewater Canal, which arrived in 1772, runs along the southern side. Heading east, the Bridgewater threads right through Grappenhall rather than skirting it: James Brindley’s aqueducts of around 1770 carry it over Lumb Brook Road and Halfacre Lane, Church Lane passes over it on a listed bridge, and it carries on below Thelwall beside the A56. Stockton Heath itself lies less than 10 metres above sea level, and the land only climbs to about 80 metres south of the M56.
For brown rats, a canal is a dependable supply of water and a long strip of cover, and a garden that backs onto one is only a short run away. Most rat and mouse control jobs we plan here begin with the same question: is the activity coming in from the canal side, up through a drain, or from a small colony that has settled under a shed next to a steady supply of bird food? The answer decides whether the work is mainly baiting, proofing or drain repair, so it is worth settling before anything goes down.
What do Victoria Square’s bars and restaurants mean for pest control?
Victoria Square, where the A49 meets the A56, is the heart of the village. The main shopping area lies just north of it and includes the Forge Shopping Centre, built where Caldwell’s forge once stood. A run of new bars and restaurants has moved into the centre, much of which was designated a conservation area in 1988, so the buildings around the square are protected for their character.
Where food businesses cluster in a compact village centre, kitchens and bin stores tend to sit close together, mice can travel between neighbouring premises through shared voids and service runs, and outdoor tables pull in wasps from late July. Food hygiene law expects every food business to have adequate pest control procedures, and inspectors look for evidence on paper rather than verbal assurances. Our commercial pest control visits for premises here follow an agreed schedule, with monitoring points kept out of sight of customers and a written report each time. Where a problem clearly spans several units, it usually pays to involve the neighbouring managers instead of treating one kitchen in isolation.
Listed cottages, a Gothic rectory and Thelwall’s old farmhouses
Some of the housing is far older than the suburb label suggests. There are 12 listed buildings in Stockton Heath, all Grade II, among them an early-19th-century terrace of brick cottages on London Road, a cottage on Grappenhall Road that dates from about 1800 or earlier, Brook House on Whitefield Road and the sandstone St Thomas’ Church of 1868. Grappenhall and Thelwall parish, next door, has 30. Near St Wilfrid’s, whose tower and most of the church were built between 1525 and 1539, stand the rendered Church Cottages with their cast-iron verandah, the stuccoed Gothic rectory of about 1830, Greenbank and the houses at Laurel Bank, and Bellhouse Farmhouse keeps its ornate iron porch. Thelwall reaches further back again: Old Hall Farmhouse carries the date 1655, Home Farmhouse 1692, Ivy Cottage is timber-framed, and the barns of Home Farm and Old Village Farm are listed as well.
Buildings of this age are generous to pests. Old timber frames, soft mortar, render and roofs patched many times over all leave gaps, and their lofts are often irregular and awkward to inspect. Grey squirrels chew into eaves and settle in roof voids, mice follow pipe runs through thick walls, and wasps, with the occasional hornet colony, take to barns and outbuildings. Work that fixes anything to a listed building must stay within listing controls, so bird proofing or mesh work on these properties is fixed in ways that can be undone without marking brick, stone or timber.
Most of the area is family housing that people own. Ward figures for Stockton Heath, quoted without a year, put owner-occupation at just under 85 per cent of 2,700 households, and Grappenhall and Thelwall parish counted 9,651 residents at the 2021 census. In practice, most pest problems here land with the householder rather than a landlord.
Gardens, parkland and the green-belt edge
A lot of green space sits within reach of these streets. At Walton, next door, the council owns Walton Hall and Gardens, where formal gardens sit alongside bowls, crazy golf, pitch and putt and a children’s zoo, and the hall’s function rooms host weddings; the Bridgewater Canal runs all the way there from Lymm. Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden is close to Grappenhall village, Alexandra Park lies beside St Thomas C of E Primary, and the Stockton Heath Festival centres on Mill Lane Field. Up the A49, Warrington Golf Club sits at the top of Appleton, and Appleton Reservoir counts among the borough’s green-belt features.
Parkland and big gardens suit grey squirrels, which cross from trees onto roofs and into lofts, especially as autumn sets in. Squirrel removal falls to private firms here, because the council does not list squirrels among the pests it treats. Venues with animals, catering and children on site, such as function rooms, schools and sports clubs, need treatments timed around opening hours and placed where nobody but our technicians can reach them.
What does Warrington Borough Council offer south of the canal?
Many councils run a pest control service for residents, but what is covered, who can book and the charges all vary and can change, so check the council’s own pest control pages before you book. If you rent, report the problem to your landlord first. If you would rather book a private firm, call or message us to arrange a visit.
Booking a visit south of the Ship Canal
The village is a short trip south of Warrington town centre across the Ship Canal, which makes it simple to schedule from our Warrington base, and Thelwall sits near the M6 junction at Lymm. We book visits to suit the property: before service for a restaurant, outside the school run for a primary school, around a function at a hire venue, or at a time that works for a householder who is out all day. Homes and businesses share the same rounds, so arrival windows are agreed when you book rather than left open.
What Warrington Borough Council offers

Pest control in Stockton Heath & Grappenhall: frequently asked questions
Do you cover Grappenhall, Thelwall, Appleton and Walton as well as Stockton Heath?
Yes. We work across this part of WA4: the village centre around Victoria Square and London Road, Grappenhall village and the streets on either side of the Bridgewater Canal, Thelwall out towards the M6, and the neighbouring suburbs of Appleton and Walton. Lymm, just east of Thelwall, is on the same rounds, so a householder in a Thelwall cottage and a restaurant near Victoria Square can be booked onto the same round from our Warrington base.
Is Warrington Borough Council's pest service an option for a Stockton Heath home?
Many councils run a pest control service for residents, but what is covered, who can book and the charges all vary and can change, so check the council's own pest control pages before you book. If you rent, report the problem to your landlord first. If you would rather book a private firm, call or message us to arrange a visit.
Can you treat pests in a listed cottage or a conservation-area shop without harming the building?
Yes. Most treatments, such as dusting a wasp nest entrance, baiting rodents in secured boxes or trapping squirrels in a loft, leave nothing permanent on the building. Proofing is where listing matters: fixing mesh, spikes or netting to historic brick, stone or timber can need listed building consent, and some alterations in the conservation area around Victoria Square need the council's agreement. We plan fixings that can come off later without marking the fabric, and tell you when to speak to the council's planning team first.
We run a bar or restaurant near Victoria Square. Can you set up regular pest visits?
Yes. For food and drink premises we agree a schedule of routine inspections, with monitoring points for rodents and insects placed where they will not bother staff or diners, and a written record after every visit for your food safety file. An environmental health inspection will normally ask for exactly that paperwork. In older buildings with shared walls we also look at how pests could be moving between neighbouring units, because treating one premises on its own rarely fixes a problem that starts next door.
Why do gardens near the Bridgewater Canal attract rats?
A canal-side garden gives rats most of what they look for in one place. The canal edge and dense planting provide shelter, the water is always there, and bird feeders, compost bins, pet food and split bin bags supply the meals. Gaps around pipes, airbricks and door frames then offer a route indoors. We look for burrows, runs and gaps under sheds and decking, check whether the drains are involved, and combine secured baiting or trapping with proofing so the garden stops being worth the trip.
I let a house in Grappenhall. Who should book pest control?
That turns on the wording of the tenancy and what caused the problem. Defects in the structure that let pests in, such as gaps under the eaves or broken airbricks, generally fall to the landlord to repair, while day-to-day hygiene sits with the tenant. Check Warrington Borough Council's website for current pest control services and charges. We take bookings from landlords and agents directly, arrange access with the tenant and send a written report for your property records.
